You follow Kvana out further into the desert, noticing her become more and more twitchy as you approach the flickering lights. As you get closer you realise they must be created by something reflecting the sunlight.. but in an unnatural, distorted manner. The sand gives way to rock here and you climb a slightly steep gradient which, for the moment, obscures the lights. One of the large ochre rocks up near the top of this hill unfolds revealing itself to be another neuter Drigetti.
He rises and pads down to meet you both, whuffling a welcome and looking from you to Kvana questioningly. She bobs her head a greetings-return. "Darbin, this traveller wishes to see the waste." You notice his ears flick and he steals a glance at you before nodding. Flanking you on either side the two Drigetti lead you up the slope. The dune ends in a glass slag which, in itself ends in a sheer drop into a stark and strange plain that stretches... not quite to the horizon.. Something happens there that your eyes do not want to see and try as you might you cannot focus on it. The sky over the wasted lands is a nauseating rippling maelstrom of pale colours melting treacle like into one another. The lights you saw is the sunlight reflected from a few ruined buildings near the edge of the plain, their metal skeletons jagged bones poking from the barren ground, chared in some places, strangely corroded in others. A glistening ripple in the air not a meter away from you makes you refocus. A transparent force shield of some sort, thin and fine as spiders web yet somehow very strong creates a wall between the Tir and the wastes. Squinting you can make it out as it continues into the air in a slight arc... covering the entire Tir in a protective sphere. A low voice beside you makes you jump. Darbin speaks, his voice soft and melodious. "This is the remains of the Elders city. A few ruins lie within the Tir lands but all their technology, all of their wisdom and history, was destroyed in the mage storms." A wind teazes at the manes of the two drigetti, blowing from behind you into the wastes. "The mage storms still rage across this plain from time to time." K'vana takes up the tale. "It is not safe here when they do. Despite the shield Allanon created the effects of the Mage storms can sometimes blow across the barrier." "There are many strange, disfigured creatures out there that prey upon one another. Thankfully Allanon's shield protects us from them. They cannot approach it unless they are harmless." Darbin nods in agreement. "Some creature like the Mahnon Pah'llocki can venture out into the wastes without worrying about the residue magical radiation, they have an innate resistance to magic, but even Allani wouldn't go out there in a storm." K'vana sits down. "Not long ago Allani found a cryo-pod down there." She points a white claw at one of the buildings. "I helped her dig it out and drag it back up here. We found a lot of eggs which Allani said looked like Drat eggs, whatever they are." Darbin continues. "The eggs are all over on one of the islands now. Allani says they should be safe because we got them through the shield but it's best not to take chances." When you ask why you can't focus on the horizon both Drigetti shiver. "Thats because there is no horizon." K'vana says, hunching her shoulders uncomfortably. "The explosion that caused the original mage storms unmade a large section of this plane of existance. The Elders really had no idea what they had done... infact most of the survivers fled from this plain as soon as they could but Allanon stayed on in near that place for long enough to create the first Mahnon for the Tir." Darbin shivers again violently. "Lets get away from this place, it's making me feel spooked." Both K'vana and you readily agree and the two drigetti lead you back towards the centre of the Tir and towards an Oasis. |
